COLOMBIA: FINCA LA CONEJERA
Medium bodied, sweet and well balanced.
BEST FOR: Filter brew (cafetiere, drip filter/paper filter)
We are super excited to have received our coffee from Gregorio after staying on his farm and helping him harvest his coffee.
Gregorio recently won an award for an event organised by the local co-operative for his experimental work with fermentation. For fertiliser Gregorio uses animal waste , the de pulped coffee cherry, fruit from the farm &some of the waste water from the washing the coffee (which previously would have gone Into the river and contaminated it). It’s then put into bags and after a month its ready to use as fertiliser for his coffee tree’s and sugar cane .
Other farmers in the area would use a chemical fertisler but he’s now teaching other farmers to undertake these organic methods and championing the benefits of this. There was an initial investment in purchasing the equipment first but now saving money as he no longer has to buy the fertiliser and recognises its good for the environment too. The organic fertiliser from the tanks is sprayed onto the leaves to help the trees grow and includes manure , calcium , spring water and milk
There are 3500 trees on the farm , many of which are shaded by fruit tress . He’s also planted sunflowers as is good for oxygen for the soil and encourages bees.
He produces his own honey from the bees which he sells in san roque every Sunday alongside chicken, oranges, sugarcane and eggs.
